Uganda: Beer shortage hits the capital, Kampala, as food prices rise
Beer shortage hit Kampala suburbs as food prices shot up during the festive season. Bell beer manufactured by Uganda Breweries Ltd ran out in most depots in Luzira, Kitintale and Bugolobi, Daily Monitor communicated on December 28.
At Uganda Brewery's famous Kayonza depot in Luzira, no trace of bell beer could be seen. In some bars, where it could be found, the price shot up from Shs1,500 to Shs1,700 per 500 mils bottle. Most revellers resorted to other beer brands including Nile Breweries products like Nile Special and Club Pilsener beers.
"It's very bad to get used to a particular drink. But given the circumstances we are in, you have to think very fast and look for an option, " John Asiku, found looking for his favourite drink in Luzira, told Daily Monitor.
"But what really happened, imagine Uganda Breweries depot is just near here and they have failed to supply us," another Jane Nakamate, a resident of Luzira said.
It is not clear why the beer shortage hit the city suburbs. However, some revelers contend that the manufacturers could have underestimated while others blamed Uganda Breweries for what they called laxity.
Food prices also shot up in most areas in and around Kampala. Cow meat (beef), shot up from Shs2,500 and Shs2,600 per kilogramme to Shs3,000. Goat meat is still up from Shs3,500 a kilo to Shs5,000. Local breed chicken, sold between Shs10,000 and Shs15,000 from Shs7,000.
At the City Abbattoir, a live goat, which used to sell at an average of Shs30,000 and Shs35,000 on ordinary days, went to between Shs45,000 and Shs50,000. By Christmas day, most businessmen were still stuck with their goats.
"This is our crazy Kampala where people want to take advantage of Christmas. From transport fares to even food, the fellows want to reap from us eh!," Mark Opio, a resident of Namugongo said.
